Up to 500GB of usage, you will be able to access the network at 10Mbps speed. After 500GB you will be able to access the network at a standard 4Mbps speed. Should you use more than 550GB, Telkom will then reduce the speed to 2Mbps.	Up to 600GB of usage, you will be able to access the network at 20Mbps speed. After 600GB you will be able to access the network at a standard 4Mbps speed. Should you use more than 650GB, Telkom will then reduce the speed to 2Mbps.

When it comes to Telkom's FUP, Telkom has the right to apply restrictions to an Uncapped LTE account if a customer's usage behaviour is deemed to be affecting the user experience of other customers on the Telkom network. FUP throttling or FUP usage is the intentional slowing of an internet service and is not illegal by any means. It's merely a reactive measure to regulate network traffic and minimise bandwidth congestion and that's why Telkom throttles uncapped LTE customers.

If you're a Telkom Uncapped LTE customer, you may have noticed that even though your Telkom Uncapped wi-fi deal is a truly uncapped product, that it's still subject to an internet fair use policy. This begs the question: what exactly is fair use?

In an effort to ensure all its users enjoy a superior Uncapped LTE experience with fast speeds, Telkom wants to ensure that there are no heavy users that will ruin the experience for other users. Heavy or excessive users are generally those who use peer-to-peer downloads (P2P), NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) or file-sharing software. They are usually people who upload and download large files, such as torrented movies and music on a daily basis, reaching their FUP threshold.

These users take up excessive bandwidth, slowing the connection down for everyone else. Throttling restrictions are thus imposed to ensure that the best quality of broadband is available to the maximum number of customers.

Normal web browsing, video and music streaming, email, VoIP and TV/Radio streaming do not fall into the P2P/NNTP category and speed will not be affected. Speed effects are only dependent on the amount of data that you have used.

With Telkom's recent introduction of both a 10Mbps and a 20Mbps Uncapped LTE product, their Fair Usage Policy monthly data allocation has been modified slightly and works as follows:

For the Uncapped LTE 10Mbps deal:

Up to 500GB of usage, you will be able to access the network at 10Mbps speed.

Can I Upgrade Or Downgrade My Telkom LTE Internet Deal?

The ability to change your Telkom LTE package depends on how many months you are into your contract or commitment period:

1) If you are 1 - 3 months into your Telkom LTE contract period, you cannot change your package. In this instance, if you want a new deal you will need to take out a new contract.

2) If you are 4 - 21 months into your contract period, you are allowed to change your package. Telkom refers to this as a package migration and we charge an administration fee and a penalty fee to perform the migration which is calculated at the time of the package migration request.

3) If you are in the 22nd month or more of your contract period, you are allowed to change your package. Telkom refers to this as a package renewal and no administration or penalty fees will be charged.

Announcement: Telkom Discontinues Copper Services

Telkom, has recently announced that it will be discontinuing its copper network. This move has significant implications for the future of voice communication in South Africa.

The copper network has been the backbone of voice communication in South Africa for many years. However, with the advent of new technologies such as fibre-optic cables and 5G wireless networks, the use of copper has become increasingly obsolete. Telkom has recognised this and has decided to discontinue its copper network entirely.

It is important to note that the transition away from copper will not be immediate. Telkom has announced a phased approach to discontinuing the network, with plans to complete the process by 2023. In the meantime, customers who still rely on the copper network for their voice communication will need to start planning for the transition to alternative technologies.

In line with Telkom's ongoing efforts to offer their customers the best possible service experience, it will be necessary for copper customers to migrate or upgrade to a newer internet technology. These technologies will not only offer a better experience for customers but will also help Telkom address the challenges they face in relation to copper theft.

Are Telkom landlines being discontinued?

Once Telkom has approved your Telkom LTE application on their system, you will receive a order number and a waybill number, which you can use for tracking purposes. You order will then be handed over to Courier IT for delivery. You can anticipate your Telkom LTE SIM & router (if ordered) to be delivered within 7 - 10 working days, from your order approval date.
