What is Telkom's Fair Usage Policy (FUP)?

So often our customers ask us a host of questions about how and why Telkom throttles their Uncapped LTE connection, but there is a very good reason why. To ensure that everyone can enjoy the best experience using their internet service, Telkom Uncapped data deals are governed by Telkom's Fair Usage Policy which works as follows:
 Telkom Uncapped LTE 10Mbps Telkom Uncapped LTE 20Mbps
Up to 500GB of usage, you will be able to access the network at 10Mbps speed. 

After 500GB you will be able to access the network at a standard 4Mbps speed. 

Should you use more than 550GB, Telkom will then reduce the speed to 2Mbps.
 Up to 600GB of usage, you will be able to access the network at 20Mbps speed. 

After 600GB you will be able to access the network at a standard 4Mbps speed. 

Should you use more than 650GB, Telkom will then reduce the speed to 2Mbps.
When it comes to Telkom's FUP, Telkom has the right to apply restrictions to an Uncapped LTE account if a customer's usage behaviour is deemed to be affecting the user experience of other customers on the Telkom network. FUP throttling or FUP usage is the intentional slowing of an internet service and is not illegal by any means. It's merely a reactive measure to regulate network traffic and minimise bandwidth congestion and that's why Telkom throttles uncapped LTE customers.

  • To enjoy a smooth standard definition video in 480p, a fibre internet speed that is more than 3Mbps is recommended.
  • For a single user wanting to stream in HD, a 5Mbps fibre line is recommended.
  • If you have a family, opting for standard HD 1080p, the recommended fibre line speed is 10Mbps - 25Mbps.
  • Ultra HD streaming requires a minimum of 25Mbps fibre line speed.

Watching TV shows or movies on Netflix uses about 1GB of data per hour for each stream of standard definition video and up to 3GB per hour for each stream of HD video & 5-7GB per hour for 4K content

Netflix and Showmax automatically adjust the video quality to match your internet speed. If Netflix detects a slow internet speed, it will not stream high-definition quality video, even if the movie or TV show is available in HD.

YouTube ▶️

  • For standard definition video streaming, a fibre connection that is more than 3Mbps is recommended.
  • To stream in 1080p HD content, a 5Mpbs and up fibre line is required.

Music 🎵

  • To stream music without having to worry about your song buffering, you will only need 2-10Mbps as a starting point. Keep in mind that a faster fibre connection is required if you would like to do other things like play games or stream a YouTube video.

Gaming 🎮

If you’re a gamer, ideally you should opt for an uncapped, unshaped and unthrottled fibre internet package with at least 50 Mbps download speed and anything from 20Mbps upload line for your gaming needs. Depending on the games you play, you can use up to 1GB an hour or more.


If you live in a household with more than 2 people, things can get complicated. You would require additional line speed - in this instance roughly 5-10Mbps per person. 


It is also important to remember that the amount of devices connected to the same fibre internet connection will affect your upload and download speeds.
